What is a cold water accumulator?

Much like a break tank, a cold water accumulator is used for water storage. Traditional unvented cylinders depend upon incoming mains pressure and water volume to produce high flow rates but, if mains flow is poor, the accumulator boosts the flow rate available to hot and cold water taps by storing water in a membrane diaphragm. The accumulator then delivers this water to the cylinder and cold outlets when demand exceeds the mains flow rate available.

Can I use an accumulator to increase water pressure?

No, accumulators do not increase water pressure. They simply allow the water system to work at its optimum pressure capacity by supplementing the flow of water when the system has open outlets (i.e. the tap is running). When the outlets are closed, the accumulator shuts off this additional flow until it is required again. To sum up, an accumulator cannot increase the pressure from the mains but it will increase the flow. The option of an added booster pump can raise system pressure to 3.5 Bar.

Do I have to use an upstream kit with a cold water accumulator?

Yes, an upstream kit is required (available at Pump World in 22mm or 28mm sizes) to connect to the cold mains and hot water cylinder. The upstream kit is required for operation. Use without the upstream kit invalidates warranty.
